Steve Hood Tue 13th March 2012

I'm pleased to announce that Steve Hood from Lincoln Region will be Guest Speaker at our presentation evening in March.

PAC Coaches needed

You will all be aware that Barrie Rickards left funds to the PAC, which is appropriately being used to pay for the training of angling coaches. I have approached the Committee to request funding for training at least one coach within the Notts region. Anyone interested in becoming a coach, please let me know and we'll try and get the ball rolling on this one. The recent teach-in went very well and is likely to become a regular fixture and indeed we have already been approached by other clubs to do the same for them. Nationally this has proved not only to be a good way of educating pikers from a young age but also a useful tool for increasing membership.

Anyone interested in attending teach-ins, coaching or presenting a slide show to juniors should let me know. We are hoping to be able to offer a full range of events for juniors and beginners next year.

Alan (RO)

Guest Speaker posters

Ivan Cooke has very generously agreed to produce posters for local events this year. Each event will have it's own poster, which will be sent to all members for putting up in local tackle shops, etc. Many thanks Ivan, this should prove to be a very good media for promoting events.

Please support Ivan's recruitment drive and lets get these posters in all the tackle shops we can.

Alan (RO)

Derrick Amies Tue 13th Dec 2011

Don't forget that Derrick will be speaker at our next meeting. He's travelling up from Norfolk so this is a rare opportunity to meet Derrick. He's been doing the rounds with his talk and, not surprisingly, it's going down very well so don't miss out - full member support would be greatly appreciated.

Girton charity event Sun 27th Nov 2011

The big day is nearly here. Another chance to raise charity funds and of course 'kick some Lincoln ass'. To keep the plaque we need to have a good attendance so have a rally around and lets get attendance even higher than last year. PAC members only though lads.

Full details of the event are on the 'events'page. Anyone who wants to help out is more than welcome to come early (6am ish) to help us to set up the barby, etc.

Alan (RO)

Croc is bagging up

Well done to Ian 'Croc' Cougill who has been getting into some big girls already this year. No, not those kind of girls, he's a reformed man. He's already had a couple of big Esox girls of the mid-20 range (I'm still talking fish here) and the season has barely started. He always was a jammy tw_t though!

I'll get the pics posted to our gallery asap. Anyone else with pics, send em in and we'll add to our rather nice looking gallery.

Alan (RO)

Teach-in Sun 13th Nov 2011

Many thank to those who attended the junior teach-in at Cottam. This was attended by 9 juniors from Shirebrook Angling Club, some with special needs. The event went very well and fortunately a couple of pike were caught too so we had something to demonstrate on. Full details of the teach-in will appear in the Feb issue of Pikelines. The event went so well that it is likely to be a regular fixture and we've already been asked to do talks and a teach-in with Worksop juniors.

Alan (RO)

Pre-season meeting

Many thanks to those who attended our pre-season meeting. All issues of the club, administration & finances were discussed. All issues raised will be published in our newsletter, which will be available at the next meeting. This will also be e-mailed out so all members will have the opportunity to have their say.

Phil strikes gold again

Captain Kirk has done it again - yes! he's already had a 30 this season on his 1st day out. Can you pick some lottery numbers for me Phil?

I'll leave the catch details to Phil to publish but very well done mate. Had it been anyone else I would be green with envy but you work hard for the fish you catch so deserve the best results.

Alan (RO)

Angler on Chew didn't have a clue!

Kev Berry & I were rattled somewhat on our 1st day at Chew this season. We witnessed an angler crossing the water in his boat, who seemed to be aimlessly roaming around. He eventually approached another boat about 50 yards from us and asked if the other anglers could take his picture. He then produced his landing net from the boat to display a nice pike. Incredibly, he had carried this pike around in his boat, rather than in the water, in temperatures above 25 degrees.

No surprise then to watch him for a good 15 mins trying to revive the pike in the water. Kev pointed out that he'd killed the fish and couldn't bring it back from the dead - well, in so many words.

It beggars belief that an angler would carry a pike inside his boat rather than over the side in the landing net in such warm weather. All for a photo of a fish.

Sometimes I despair at what I see!!!

Alan (RO)

Convention a roaring success

Many thanks to all those who managed to get to the Convention at Kettering. Not had any official figures back yet but the event certainly seemed very busy & trade stands did very well.

Junior event was a great success, about 20 youngsters got spoiled rotten.

Pete was farting well as usual so the beer must have been good too.

Alan (RO)

Fish-ins confirmed

The fish-ins have now been confirmed for the season - events page updated with details.

We'll be doing our stuff at Girton pit, Mapperley res, Butterley res & Cottam. Choice of Trent or lakes at Cottam depending on water conditions at the time.

Alan (RO)

New Treasurer

I'm pleased to announce that Ivan Cooke has accepted the post of Treasurer to the club. Bazz & I thought Ivan the perfect choice for the job. He attends all meetings & events and therefore will be able to take control of the club's finances from collecting monies to banking & purchasing.

As the club grows there is a need for the finances to be managed seperately to the routine running of the club. Ivan's first job will be to setup a bank account for the club. Hand-over of the acounts should be an easy process as Mick has kept accurate and detailed books for the last 2 years. Official hand-over of the books will take place at our first members meeting in October, where Ivan will pick up the reins.

Bazz & I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ivan for agreeing to take on this very important supporting role for the club.

Notts takes over Pikelines once more

Well done to all those who had articles published in the mag. Once more Notts lads have lead the way when it comes to supporting the mag. Steve Ormrod (Editor) passes on his thanks to all who have contributed to the mag.

Congratulations to Phil kirk for winning 'The James Holgate Article of the Year' award. Phil's many quality contributions to the mag have been rightfully recognised by the Committee. Very well done mate.

Well done to Ian Cougill for his 'Under the skin' article. A very well written and interesting account of his piking. Good stuff mate, the pike pics were top notch too.

I was left speechless (almost) when I found out that I'd won the 'Barrie Rickards Pike Angler of the Year' award. Any award with Barrie's name on it is a great honour indeed.

Notts lads give more than an average amount of support to the club and it's great for Bazz & I to see you all getting recognition for your efforts, something the PAC is very good at doing. Keep up the good work lads.

Alan (RO)

Treasurer

Unfortunately Mick Cobb has had to step down as Treasurer this year due to work commitments. Bazz & I would like to take this opportunity to give our sincere thanks to Mick for his support over the past 2 yrs. Mick has not only carried out the duties as Treasurer but was also instrumental in helping the ROs re-form the region. Thanks again Mick for all your help, which has been greatly appreciated.

Alan (RO)

Pike Killer stopped in his tracks

I recently had several reports from fellow anglers fishing the Trent at Laneham, of a certain angler who was fishing for pike and throwing them up the bank. Fortunately, all the anglers I've spoken to at the venue are 'pike friendly' and this individual has been badgered off the water. For some reason he seems to be avoiding me.

Though it is never nice to hear reports of pike being killed, it is nice to know that the local PAC was contacted and had the support of fellow local anglers, who were mostly matchmen. Good to see that opinions on pike have changed considerably over the years and that the PAC offers a local contact point for concered anglers. Unfortunately there will always be a minority of 'Numpties' who will remain ignorant to the effects of removing pike but this has clearly reduced over the years, which is a good sign.

Alan (RO)

Pike left to die

I was recently contacted by a member of the public who had found a pike left for dead on the wall of the local Asda. Unfortunately the pike, of around 5lb, was dead by the time I got there and no one wanted to pick it up to return it to the canal, which was only a few yards away. Aparently it's teeth put them off a bit.

Though this poor creature couldn't be saved, again it was nice that someone reported it. I've put the feelers out but no one seems to know who the pike slayer is. Fortunately we have an excellent local following and plenty of eyes and ears on the bank so these types of incident are quite rare.

Alan (RO)

Long Lines

Long-lining is a method used by Eastern Europeans to catch fish from our waterways for the table. They consist of long lengths of heavy gauge mono, equipped with numerous large barbed & baited hooks. I for one have always thought that the publicity surrounding these items has been exagerated and that the problem is not as bad as we're lead to believe by the angling press. I WAS WRONG!! During the Spring & Summer I've been called to the local Chesterfield Canal a number of times to witness the presence of long-lines. On one occasion, some local youths found a line by accident while lure fishing on the High School stretch. A bream of around 3lb was removed from the line. This must be the luckiest bream in the canal.

All these incidents were reported to the EA but they simply do not have the resources to act on these finds or police the waterways as we would like. Due to the nature of long-lines, they are very difficult to find and so most are found by accident. This is obviously a national problem with no simple solutions but if you do find a line be sure to report the incident to the EA Emergency Hotline 0800 80 70 60. I appreciate that the EA will not be able to respond but they do record locations of all finds, which may highlight areas where they may be able to act.

Charity event goes from strength to strength

Our charity event & inter-regional challenge with the Lincoln 'drain bashers' is set to be the main event of the season once more. This event gets bigger & better every year and will take place on Sunday 27th November.

Mick Cobb has once more given up his exclusive water for the day for this special event. There will be an early morning barby, a busy days fishing (we hope) and capped off with a free raffle & presentation of the highly acclaimed Inter-regional Plaque.

This year the 'big guns' are out as Nev Fickling will hopefully be joining us for the day. This should boost the Lincolnshire morale a bit.

Sponsor forms are available from from the ROs.

Not a day to be missed - members only - free fishing - full member support very much appreciated for this one if we are to retain the title for the 3rd year running.

Alan (RO)

Dovecote Park sponsors event again

I'm very pleased to announce that John Morton's employers, Dovecote Park will once again be providing us with free burgers for our main charity event in November. To have such a reputable company sponsor this event is fantastic and very much appreciated. I'll be sending them a thankyou letter for their continued support.

Alan (RO)

Pikelines Articles

Many thanks to all the Notts lads who have contributed to the Pikelines mag. Sometimes the mag seems to be full of Notts articles. This is credit to the many local members who play such an active role within the club and contribute so much good knowledge & information to the mag. Thanks to all those who have recently made a real effort & had their articles published. You all make Bazz & I look like we know what we're doing. The Committee and of course Editor Steve Ormrod very much appreciate your support & contribution to the mag & club.

Alan (RO)

PAC Convention

Just a reminder that the Convention is on 1st October this year at the Kettering Conference Centre. This is a great venue and is set to be one of the biggest events yet.

Eric Edwards has worked tirelessly to set-up a junior workshop and all new junior members will be showered with freebies. If you're going and can take a junior along, this will be a great opportunity for them to meet their piking heros & learn a few things too.

Bazz & I look forward to seeing you all there.

Alan (RO

Changes to events / speaker dates

Please note the fish-in dates have been changed to Sundays in the hope that this better suits members and gives more members the opportunity to attend.

Speaker evenings & dates have not been changed but Nev & Jon's talks have been swapped around to suit other commitments they both have.

Alan (RO)

Congratulations to Ivan Cooke

Ivan has become very well known within angling circles and continues to give Notts 100% support. The film he presented to us last April went down so well that there were calls for him to take it to the road. I'm pleased to say, he did just that and was Guest Speaker at Lincoln for their first meeting of the season. Not surprisingly, Ivan's talk went down a treat. Well done Ivan.

Alan (RO)

Guest Speakers 2011 - 2012

Speakers have now been confirmed for the coming season, details on 'events' page. We have got a great line-up once more, Graham Booth will be bringing copies of his new book along so a good opportunity to grab a signed copy. Derrick Amies will of course have signed copies of his books available too. Jon Neafcy has become very popular, giving talks on many aspects of piking throughout the country. Of course, Local Legend and regular fixture Nev Fickling will be with us again to share his wealth of knowledge.

Our Speakers will have to travel some distance to entertain us this year so the usual full member support would be very much appreciated.

Alan (RO)

Congratulations to Kev Berry

Kev, the jammy git managed to Christen his new boat with 2 mid 20s this year during our Broads sessions. I'm delighted for Kev but might be looking for a less successful boating partner next season.

Alan (RO)

Get well soon Andrew

Sadly, one of our favourite fishing characters, Andrew Cooper has been too ill to attend further events this year. Hope you're on the mend soon mate, look forward to seeing you as soon as you're back on form. Ivan's results have dropped since you've been ill so we suspect you've been catching his fish for him all along, or maybe he's just missing his fishing buddy.

Get well soon mate - from all the Notts lads

Alan (RO)

Phil Kirk's 1st 30

Congratulations to Phil, the Grand Master has finally netted his first 30. True to form, Phil also landed another 20 during the same session. No one has put more effort into the sport or spent more hours on the bank so this is a very worthy reward. Well done mate, it couldn't have come to a more deserving angler. I'm hoping Phil will do us a Pikelines article about the session so I've not put too much detail here. Looking forward to getting a run down on the capture at the next meeting.

Alan (RO)

Girton Charity Fish-In Sunday 27th Nov 2011

Special thanks to Mick Cobb for giving up his 200 acre water once more for our main event of the year.

This years main charity event will once more double up as our inter-regional challenge with the Mighty 48, Lincoln Region. We need good attendance if we are to maintain our winning form. The event is open to PAC members only, juniors must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult. No live-baiting allowed (not even Kev's semi-deads). Fishing is free but we would expect all anglers attending to have raised at least £20 for our nominated charity, The Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Service. Sponsorship monies will be collected in at future meetings for presenting to our charity at the end of the season.

Meeting at the fishery from 7:00 am. Once registered with the Steward, you will receive  free raffle tickets and can munch on an early morning burger before chosing your own swim.

Fishing is from 8:00am to 4:00pm, meeting back at the barby area for raffle draw & presentation. This year's winners will again receive the 'Inter-regional Challenge award' in the shape of a rather large plaque which the winning region will get to proudly display at their meeting venue.

Drections: From the A57 Lincoln Rd, turn off near Dunham Bridge on the A1133 towards South Clifton/Girton. Follow the road for a few miles and turn right down Meadow Lane - Sign posted 'Girton Sailing Club'. The fishery is on your left, meeting inside last gateway on the left.

Sat Nav users: NG23 7 (this postcode will take you directly to the fishery)

Fish-In Rules

  • Max 4 rods (dead bait / lure)
  • No livebaiting
  • Enjoy !!

Trophies will be up for grabs for all Notts lads.

Remember this is a charity event with all funds going towards the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance so make sure you have got lots of sponsorship dosh raised.

Important!! This is also an inter-regional challenge with the ' Lincoln Mighty 48 tiddler bashers' so we need to be on top form to avoid being slaughtered in the next issue of Pikelines.

Alan (RO)

Pikelines Articles Wanted:

It's your chance for fame (but can't promise fortune)!!

Pikelines mag is always on the look out for new material and we're very lucky in Notts to have the experience of members to call on.

If you can provide anything on the following areas, please send us a few words & pics and we'll arrange to have your stuff published:

  • Technical / rigs / methods - this could be a new rig you've designed or an old one which you've modified or maybe a method you've found to be the most successful or simply a helpful tip for beginners
  • Biography - anything about your angling history, inspirations, etc
  • Conservation issues - you may have concerns on a local or national level regarding pike removal, contaminated water, etc
  • Pike handling - you may have witnessed poor pike handling or methods and stepped in to offer advice to a junior or inexperienced angler. A story about what you did to help in any way with pike welfare or conservation is always welcomed by the PAC

The topics above are only a guide - Pikelines is your magazine for you to offer your advice, experience, stories and opinions.

If you need any help to put your article together, the ROs will help in any way we can.

Any members with articles or features they wish to have published, sent to ROs or pikelines before the 1st week in January for publishing in the February Issue.

Alan (RO)

Pikelines Articles

All members are urged to put articles forward for publication in Pikelines. This could be anything to do with piking, a personal story, pike pics, experiences, anything you feel strongly about or anything you like to do with piking. We all have a few stories to tell and in Notts we've got the advantage of having some very experienced anglers. Put pen to paper and share your experiences and knowledge with other members.

Send your articles to Steve Ormrod, Pikelines Editor or contact Alan to discus your ideas 07815 308463.

Steve is always on the look out for new and interesting stuff for the mag and particularly anything which demonstrates members efforts in educating others with regard to pike handling, techniques and welfare. We have all done something which promotes the club and it's values so get writing and pass on your experiences for the mag and others.

Alan (RO) - abstract from Environment Agency publication 2009

 Regional Members PAC Challenge

The PAC has less than 3000 members nationally and this figure doesn't represent the majority of pike anglers in the UK and we all know it should do.

Our Regional Members PAC Challenge for this season is to recruit as many pike anglers to the club as possible. We all know good fellow anglers who aren't in the PAC so lets get em on board.

Our Notts region has over 100 local members and every one of us could easily recruit at least one new member this season. The Pikelines mag is worth more than the membership costs without all the other benefits so it shouldn't be too difficult to recruit some new blood.

Membership Application forms are available from the ROs or online at the main PAC web site.

Promote the PAC and the welfare of the Pike!!
