The Pike Anglers' Club of Great Britain Nottingham Region 26

Guest Speakers

This page is dedicated to all those who have taken time out of their busy schedules to give talks at our regional meetings. Very many thanks to all those who have shared their expertise and experiences with our members. We can't thank you enough but hope that this section goes some way to giving you some well deserved recognition, not only for your talk but also your continued efforts in the conservation of the pike and pike fishing in general.

JON NEAFCY

''Stepping Stones''

Jon was guest speaker at our members meeting on Tue 9th March 2010.

We were delighted that Jon took time out from his busy schedule to travel down from the Lake District to do us a talk here in Notts.. As expected, Jon was very well received by the Notts lads and was soon in full swing with his talk, entitled 'Stepping Stones' . He gave an in-depth account of his fishing career from it's early beginnings, covering his key mile-stones along the way.

Jon is one of the best known anglers and renouned for his passionate support of the PAC and is never far away from the head lines. So not surprising he covered all aspects of pike fishing and it's conservation. There were of course many pictures to browse, completing his excellent presentation. It's only a matter of time before Jon writes a book - watch this space!

Many thanks Jon for traveling so far to do us a talk, we're sure you enjoyed the evening as much as we did and your unrivalled support of the PAC and it's regions are very much appreciated.

MARK BARRETT & DENNIS MOULES

Mark & Dennis were guest speakers at our meeting on Tuesday 9th February 2010

We were thrilled that Mark & Dennis were prepared to travel so far to do us a talk and give their support to the region. As expected, the evening was well attended with members who had missed their talk at the Conference here to catch up and see what all the praise was about, they weren't disappointed.

These are two of the nicest, most well known and respected anglers and 'true to form' our lads made them very welcome. Mark and Dennis went out of their way to meet all members as they arrived and were soon deep in fishing conversation and banter. A book purchasing and signing session was soon underway and as expected, many copies were sold. Most of us already had a copy so I think every Notts member must have at least one copy by now.

Their talk set off in predictable good humour from the start with a few funny stories from Dennis and cartoons from Mark. This set the standard for the rest of the evening and there were many more funny stories to come. Mark & Dennis have certainly got their double-act perfected and the Notts lads were glued to the presentation throughout.

They covered it all, the history of the Fens, pike location, methods, tips and tricks and brought the subject right up to date. Those of us who have fished the Fens were aware of how difficult these waters can be but the combined experience and knowledge of Mark and Dennis was obvious but also obviously earned with many hours of fishing these sometimes very difficult waters.

Mark and Dennis gave a brilliant talk, which was not only extremely interesting and informative, but their presentation was pure brilliance throughout. Any regions or organisations who are on the look out for speakers - look no further. I'm sure Mark and dennis would be delighted to do further talks and we would highly recommend you invite them along.

Their understanding of the pike and their personal contributions to it's conservation was evident throughout. Two fantastic guys and what an absolute credit they are to the PAC and the industry as a whole.

Following their talk I've received many e-mails and phone calls from members with words of thanks and praise which I've passed on to Mark and dennis. That says it all !

If you haven't already bought their book, take it from me, this is a fantastic read from start to finish and a must-have for anyone wanting to tackle the Fens. Their book covers the history of the Fens, tactics and brilliantly illustrated stories, an easy and interesting read.

They have modestly included chapters by other anglers who have specialised in different areas of the Fens and this adds great credit to the authors and the book. In my opinion, the best publication on the subject by far and is set to become an all-time great. If you want a copy, let me know and I'll pass on your details.

JOHN 'WATTO' WATSON

John was guest speaker at our meeting on Tuesday 12th January 2010

We were delighted to have John brave the elements and travel from Norfolk to be with us. As expected, we had a full house with the first half hour taken up with book signing. Our lads never miss an opportunity and books old and new were presented to John for him to scribble in. His new book and DVD were flying off the shelf too.

John's slide show was nothing short of brilliant with a trip down memory lane for most of us as we covered John's history of piking, leading on to his recent specimen hunting in the USA and beyond. There was something for everyone, presented in a relaxed, interactive way. John covered the lot in his no-nonsense way with plenty of humour throughout.

Not surprisingly, he hit it off with our lads from the start and the questions were soon flowing. His experience is second to none and this showed in his slide show and discusions, which were both very interesting and informative.

I don't really know how to describe this, but the respect for John could be felt throughout the room. My phone has been red-hot since the talk for me to pass on thanks and praise to John - that says it all!

Thanks again Watto, I'm sure you enjoyed the evening as much as we did. We look forward to having you join us again soon.

MIKE BOWEN

Mike getting into the theme

Laughs all round

Mike was guest speaker at our members meeting on Tuesday 8th December 2009

Mike came equiped with a host of props, including a 16ft kayak complete with it's elaberate baiting system. This was a fantastic presentation full of banter, stories and side-splitting laughter. Mike gave a brilliant account of his fishing history.

As a well travelled and experienced angler, his talk was equally as interesting as it was funny. He really should be on the stage. If there's a fine line between intelligence and insanity I think Mike crossed it a few times during the evening. Anyone who has not had the pleasure of Mike's talk, you really are missing a treat. An act not to be missed.

Having travelled a long way to do us a talk, we can't thank you enough Mike. Well done, brilliant and a great night had by all. A truly enjoyable and memorable evening.

IAN WEATHERALL

Ian showing off one of his tiddlers

Ian was guest speaker at our members meeting on Tuesday 10th November 2009.

This was again a very well attended meeting. Ian had recently given a presentation at the PAC Conference and this had gone down so well that those who missed it were here to see what all the praise was about. They weren't disappointed!

Ian is a well travelled, reputable all-round specimen angler and gave a detailed account of his fishing career to date, his inspirations, general pike fishing and his fascination for zander. Covering waters from the Ancholme and Fens to Ireland, this gave a brilliant insight into Ian's angling career and left us green with envy at the pictures of his achievements over the years. His rewards haven't come easy though, he certainly puts the hours and dedication into the sport and gave a realistic and all-familiar account of his blanking sessions too.

Ian's talk was not only very interesting and informative but also filled with stories and humour throughout. A brilliant presentation enjoyed by all.

Ian in full swing. His talk was far from boring, visiting Lincoln lad in background must have had a long day.

A full house, as expected with Ian as guest speaker.

Thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable evening Ian. We look forward to seeing you again soon and wish you continued success with your specimen hunting (even with your bream fishing).

PHIL KIRK

Phil was guest speaker at our members meeting on Tuesday 13th October 2009.

This is the talk all our members were looking forward to and, as expected we had a fantastic turn-out to listen to Phil's experiences. As Regional Organiser for Notts for over 20 years and PAC member for much longer, he is one of the most respected and liked local anglers and has accumulated many years of experience and knowledge of all pike issues.

His talk was exceptional and his professional presentation kept all glued to his every word but with plenty of banter and masses of humour throughout. Phil was very well received and at ease amongst his local lads and I'm sure enjoyed the evening as much as we did.

Phil in full swing

I've had loads of messages of praise to pass on to Phil - but no point in encouraging his ego. Joking aside, a great evening had by all, my ribs are still aching from the laughing. The only thing I don't understand - why hasn't Phil wrote a book?

Thanks Phil, not just for the talk but your continued support of us new ROs.

NEVILLE FICKLING

Neville was guest speaker at our members meeting on Tuesday 8th September 2009.

Neville is probably one of the most famous pike anglers and being a local man, attracted a good turn-out. Neville's life has revolved around pike and zander fishing and he is a leading authority on pike, it's conservation and ecology and with 400+ 20 pounders to his credit and the odd 40 pounder - he knows a few things about catching them too. His talk covered everything from the Fens, reservoirs, to the tidal Trent, with members picking his brains at every opportunity.

His relaxed and modest approach was very well received by all and Nev's question time could have gone on into the early hours and there's me thinking our lads knew it all.

Many thanks Neville for an excellent talk, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

GRAHAM SLATER

''LURED TO THE DARK SIDE''

Graham was Guest Speaker at our first 2009 members meeting which was held on Tuesday 2nd June 2009.

It was an absolute privelege to have Graham take time out from his busy schedule to give us his support. Graham is one of the best known and highly regarded pike anglers and indeed has recently been appointed General Secretary of the PAC - Congratulations on this very well deserved position, our club is in great hands.

Graham's talk, entitled 'Lured to the Dark Side' was obviously dedicated to lure fishing and he gave an inspiring and humourous presentation, drawing on his many years of experience along with numerous funny and fishy tales. As expected, he entertained and educated one and all with fantastic feedback from all who were lucky enough to be present. Graham gave an excellent detailed account of the many methods and techniques used, including the more recent 'fly fishing' method. One day he may actually catch a pike on his fly rod and I hope his efforts are rewarded with a 'big en'. He covered the many different types of lure available - his irrational lure collecting is now common knowledge.

Many thanks Graham, we look forward to your return for another evenings entertainment.

Alan Dudhill (RO)

You don't have to be a famous pike angler to give a talk to regional members. We would love to hear from anyone who wishes to share their experiences, methods and thoughts on anything pikey. If you've got the confidence, we'll supply any presentation equipment you require for presenting slides or Powerpoint presentations.

If you're considering offering your services as Guest Speaker contact Alan (RO) who will be pleased to help you put your presentation together, including preparing a Powerpoint presentation if required.
